Born in Basel, Switzerland, Katherine Gellhorn studied graphic arts and ceramics in Leipzig and Berlin before coming to the U.S. in 1939. Settling first in Chicago, Gellhorn studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, later opening a millinery shop, Katherine’s Hats of Distinction. When Gellhorn and her husband moved to Spokane, Washington in 1957, she resumed her millinery business and continued until 1973. Gellhorn died in 1997.
Katherine Gellhorn’s hats have “labels” that are her hand-sewn first name, with an exclamation point.
