Isabel Toledo (1961-2019) studied fashion design at FIT and Parsons in New York. In 1984 she married artist Ruben Toledo, and a little over a year later she made her first collection. It was well received, with coverage in Vogue, and the clothing was carried by up-scale stores. But her designs were judged to be too avant-garde for American consumers, and due to disagreements with store buyers, for years sold only in the Japanese and French markets. Today Toledo takes her time with her collections, presenting them only when she feels they are ready.
In 2005, Isabel and Ruben jointly won the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. Early in 2007, Isabel Toledo was named creative director of Anne Klein, but worked on only two collections for that label.
