Prada was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino as a leather goods shop named Fratelli Prada. The original store was located in the prestigious Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, Italy, where it offered an array of travel accessories, including bags and trunks. In 1919, the brand gained significant recognition when it was appointed as the Official Supplier to the Italian Royal House, allowing Prada to display the House of Savoy coat of arms in its logo and solidifying its status among aristocracy.
The brand underwent a transformation when Miuccia Prada, the granddaughter of Mario, took over the design direction in the mid 1970s. Miuccia, initially focused on designing accessories, introduced a revolutionary material—nylon—into the fashion realm. This innovative use of nylon for bags not only differentiated Prada from its competitors but also paved the way for a new era of functional luxury.
In 1988, Prada made a significant leap into the fashion spotlight by hosting its first runway show. This showcased a collection that combined modernity with traditional craftsmanship. Miuccia’s unique aesthetic quickly garnered attention, establishing Prada as a leading force in high fashion. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the brand expand its offerings, leading to the introduction of its first menswear collection and the secondary line, Miu Miu, in 1993. Miu Miu, named after Miuccia’s childhood nickname, was aimed at a younger demographic and featured a more playful and experimental approach to fashion. Miu Miu quickly gained popularity and contributed to the diversification of Prada’s offerings, allowing Miuccia to express her innovative spirit more freely.
Miuccia Prada designed costumes for the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Verdi’s Attila in 2010 and collaborated with costume designer Catherine Martin on the costumes for the 2013 film The Great Gatsby. Since 2000, Prada has launched numerous fragrances, cosmetics and skincare, eyewear, watches and even a mobile phone.
