Madeleine Laferrière was a French fashion designer and couturière who rose to prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1847, Laferrière opened her own fashion house, at 28, rue Taitbout, Paris, in 1869. Maison Laferrière quickly gained a reputation for its exquisite and intricate designs. Throughout her career, Laferrière dressed many prominent women, including European aristocrats and royalty. Among her most devoted customers were Queen Maud of Norway and Alexandra of Great Britain. She continued to work until her death in 1912, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important and influential fashion designers of her era.
While Jeanne Paquin (1869-1936) is typically considered the first renowned female couture fashion designer, this assertion is contested by Laferrière, who also achieved widespread acclaim and was routinely ranked on par with Paquin and Doucet.
