Jacobson’s Department Stores were founded in 1868 in Reed City, Michigan. Its original focus was ladieswear, but later expanded to menswear and children’s clothing. It became known as an upscale retailer and became a fixture in many downtown shopping districts and upscale communities in Michigan, most notably Detroit, Lansing, Dearborn, Birmingham, Grosse Pointe, and later Rochester. Despite the advent of the indoor anchor store mall, many Jacobson’s shops remained free-standing, and provided a high standard of personal service in the communities they served. Locations expanded to Indiana, Kentucky, Florida, and Kansas.
In 2002, The chain filed for bankruptcy in what was meant to be a restructuring, which later became a liquidation. All 23 stores closed. Many of the Jacobson’s locations were considered landmarks in their Michigan communities, representing a bygone era.
