Yohji Yamamoto (b. 1943) opened his business in 1972 and showed his first collection in 1976. His first showing in Paris in 1981 created much press and established his name, although his designs were often not well understood. Yamamoto’s designs are unstructured and non-traditional. They are often layered and asymmetrical, and are, more likely than not, black. Yamamoto also does a men’s line (started in 1984) and a leisurewear line, Workshop. In 2003 he began a collaboration with Adidas, Y-3.
