Diane Von Furstenberg (b. 1946) was born in Brussels and moved to New York City, where she became best known for her ubiquitous cotton jersey wrap dress of the mid 1970s. These dresses were usually seen with long sleeves and French cuffs. The style was amazingly popular. Since 1977 she has concentrated on licenses, tried a couture house, and revived the wrap dress.
In 1997 Von Furstenberg relaunched her line of wrap dresses. Each season she has included a reissued print or two from her 1970s collections.
The earliest vintage label has an Umlaut (2 horizontal dots) over the U. Later this was changed to a slash or curved mark, and sometimes there is no mark at all.
“There was a need for my things, for very simple dresses everyone could wear.” – DVF
