Victoria’s Secret was founded in 1977 by Roy and Gaye Raymond. The first store opened at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California.
The Limited, Inc. acquired Victoria’s Secret in 1982, and under the leadership of Les Wexner, the company expanded rapidly, reaching 100 stores by 1986.
In the 1990s Victoria’s Secret became a household name, fueled by its iconic catalog featuring beautiful models and sexy high-fashion photography. The company introduced the ‘Miracle Bra’ in 1993 and responded to competition with television advertising and an annual fashion show, which debuted in 1995.
Victoria’s Secret continued to expand its product lines and retail presence in the 2000s and 2010s, introducing new brands such as Pink and Victoria’s Secret Beauty. The company also became known for its ‘Angels’, a group of high-profile models who served as brand ambassadors.
Despite facing criticism and controversy regarding underpaid factory workers, the objectification of women, and a lack of diversity, Victoria’s Secret remains a prominent brand in the fashion and beauty industry, with over 1,000 stores globally.
