Mario Valentino began designing for his family’s shoe business in 1952. His father, Vincenzo Valentino, had established Valentino shoes in the 1920s. Mario Valentino produced shoes under the Valentino name and started in 1953 under the name Mario Valentino. In addition to shoes, he designed and produced handbags and other leather accessories.
Starting in the 1970s, Mario Valentino also designed a clothing line, which was made primarily from leather. The line continues today, with son Vincenzo Valentino, Jr., being the head of the company.
There is often confusion between Mario Valentino and Valentino (Garavani). There is no relationship between the two companies.
