Tadashi Shoji was born in Japan and went to Los Angeles Trade Technical School. There he discovered his passion for fashion design and got the opportunity to help design costumes with Bill Whitton for some of the most flamboyant music stars of the period such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Neil Diamond. He started his own line of evening gowns, cocktail dresses, and other party wear after seeing that the market lacked special occasion garments for women at affordable prices. In 1982 upscale retailers Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue picked up his line and his pieces continue to be sold in various upscale retailers worldwide.
