Slack in Hollywood was the clothing label of Ira Samuel Slack, women’s clothing designer and painter. He was born in Vermont in 1890, studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, and moved to Los Angeles around 1915. An advertisement for Pictorial Review Pattern in the Los Angeles Evening Express dated June 8, 1921, names one purveyor of its products as Ira S. Slack, located at 5539 Hollywood Boulevard. In the same year, he was recorded in an LA city directory as a milliner. The 1930 US census further identified Slack as a “tailor—ladies.” He is probably best known for his oil paintings of California landscapes. Slack died in LA in 1956.
