Jane & Jane was established in 1962 by dress manufacturer David Barnes. He started and funded the label after Jean Muir turned down an offer to design for him. Jane & Jane was designed and controlled by Muir until 1966, when she started a business under her own name. Jane & Jane was later sold to dressmaking company Susan Small.
