When the Girl Scouts of America were first formed in 1912, the uniforms were made by the members and their families, using pictures of the Girl Guides uniform as a guide. By 1914 the Girl Scout organization had the uniforms manufactured. The uniforms have changed over the years, reflecting changing styles.
Mainbocher designed new uniforms for the Girl Scouts in 1948. His designs were the GSA answer to the “New Look.” Mainbocher redesigned the Intermediate, Senior, and Adult uniforms, using leaf-green Sanforized cotton cover fabric. Each of the uniforms was similar, but had subtle differences for each age group. Each had his signature buttoned collar.
In 1968 Stella Sloat designed new uniforms for the GSA. Halston did new ones in 1978 and Bill Blass designed new uniforms in 1984.
