Vinyon is the generic name, used in the U.S. only, for a synthetic fiber made of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, vinyon is “a manufactured fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is any long chain synthetic polymer composed of at least 85% by weight of vinyl chloride units.” The first vinyon for textiles was manufactured in 1939.
Clothing made of vinyon is usually leather-like or rubber-like.
