Like linen, ramie is a bast fiber, made from a plant source. The plant is a non-stinging nettle. The natural fiber is white to cream in color, and lustrous. Ramie can be made into a cloth that rivals linen in absorbency, strength when wet, and beauty. It is more time-consuming to extract the usable fiber from the plant stem, something that until recently has been done by hand.

Ramie is also known as rhea and China grass. Canton linen (grass cloth) is often made of ramie.
