Floats are the parts of yarns that go over, i.e., float over, other yarns without interweaving. The luster of satin is caused by these floats on the surface of the weave.
Floats can also be seen on the reverse of fabrics, such as brocade, where the yarns not being used in the pattern are carried across the back to the next place in which they are interwoven.
