Caustic soda is the common name for the alkali sodium hydroxide (NaOH). It is employed extensively in textile manufacturing, including its use in creating crepe textured cotton with such fabrics as lawn and organdy. The alkali shrinks the yarns on which it is printed, puckering the cloth. Caustic soda may be used directly or a resist may be applied to keep specific areas of the fabric from being affected.
When printed in stripes, the resulting fabric is plissé.
