Some of the most complex woven fabrics have been made on the jacquard loom since its invention in the early 19th century by Joseph Marie Jacquard. It was the first automated loom, programmed by a paper punch card. Prior to the jacquard loom, richly patterned fabrics (brocade, damask, tapestry, brocatelle), were handwoven on drawboy looms, using little automation. Jacquard patterns can be very large, intricate and/or curving. Brocade and damask are the two best known fabrics woven on a jacquard loom.
