Like linen, hemp is a bast fiber obtained by retting. Hemp has been used for the making of cords, ropes and sturdy, coarse fabric for millennia. It was a very popular fiber before the Industrial Revolution. More recently, its association with marijuana and hashish has made its production illegal or limited in many countries, even with selectively-bred low-narcotic varieties of the plant available.
