The original drawboy was literally a child who (sitting inside the loom) aided a weaver in the construction of handwoven figured fabrics by operating the harness cords. Later, the drawboy’s job was automated, and the early loom that did the drawboy’s job mechanically was called a drawboy loom. The types of fabrics made were precursors to those made on a jacquard loom.
