John Kloss, born John Klosowski on June 13, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, was an American fashion designer particularly known for his innovative lingerie and sleepwear.
Kloss studied clothing design at the Traphagen School of Fashion, graduating in 1958. Initially Kloss opened a custom dressmaking business in New York City, where he gained recognition through Henri Bendel. His designs in the 1960s featured body conscious, geometrically pieced color block dresses. Kloss transitioned to more flowing (but unabashedly sexy) silhouettes by the 1970s. He received two Coty Awards (1971 and 1974) for his innovative lingerie designs, notably the John Kloss Glossies bras, which were celebrated for their seamless, minimal aesthetic.
Tragically, Kloss’s life was cut short when he died by suicide on March 25, 1987, at the age of 49.
