One of the great American couturiers, Gustave Tassell began working with a small couture house in Philadelphia, then began his own business in California in 1959. Winner of a Coty Award in 1962, he was hired by the house of Norell to take over when Norman Norell died in 1972. During this time, the label reads, “Norman Norell by Tassell”. He continued there until the house closed in 1976. Never a commercial designer, Tassell then moved on to design small collections for private clients.
