As a teenager, Jean Paul Gaultier (b. 1952) sent design sketches to Pierre Cardin, who then hired him as an assistant. He later worked with Esterel and at Jean Patou before founding Jean Paul Gaultier S.A. in 1978. He was not immediately successful, but his streetwear-inspired collections hit a chord with 1980s fashionistas. He also began to experiment with underwear as outerwear, and he designed the famous lingerie-inspired stage costumes for Madonna.
In 1984, Gaultier began a menswear line – a line that sometimes put men into skirts. Junior Gaultier, a lower-priced line, was started in 1987 and Gaultier Jeans was launched in 1992. In 1997 he added a couture collection. From 2004 to 2010, Gaultier was also the designer at Hermès.
