Sydney Designs was founded by the married couple of Morris Adelson (born New York 1906, died Hawaii 1981) and Sydney Adelson (born Scotland 1915, died Hawaii 2006). The label appears in 1951, with a store at 305 Royal Hawaiian Avenue, in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii, with a manufacturing plant in Honolulu Harbor. In 1957 the company was incorporated and opened a Makaloa Street manufacturing plant in the Ala Moana area of Oahu, Hawaii. In 1959 they merged with Sun Fashions of Hawaii. Stores like Liberty House, McInerny, and Carol & Mary carried their men’s and women’s wear.
