Rykiel, Sonia

Sonia Rykiel (b. 1930) started designing for her husband’s boutique, Laura, around 1962. In 1968 she opened the first Sonia Rykiel Boutique. Throughout the 1960s she was known for her snug-fitting sweaters and sweater dresses.

The label “Inscription Rykiel” dates from 1989. In 1999 it was changed to “Sonia/Sonia Rykiel.” She is known for her work in cotton velour and for putting the seams on the outside of garments.
