Charles “Chuck” Howard (b. 1927 in Cochrane, Georgia) was one of those designers of the postwar era that gave American fashions a distinctly American look. He studied dress design in Paris after the war and then settled in New York. He worked as a photographer’s model before taking his first job in fashion with David Crystal as a sketcher. In the late 1950s he was a designer for Richard Cole. During the 1960s he worked for Bill Blass and Anne Klein. In the late-mid 1960s he became the designer at Townley, and was also designing under his own label, Chuck Howard Boutique. In addition, he was doing designs for Vogue patterns until 1974 when he returned to Anne Klein to design their Anne Klein Studio line. Howard designed menswear with partner Peter Wrigley under the Mark of the Lion label in the mid 1970s.
