Bergdorf Goodman, one of New York’s most exclusive department stores, was established in 1899. It was started by Herman Bergdorf who employed Edwin Goodman as the house designer and tailor. In the 1920s the store expanded to include ready-to-wear and their famous fur salon. It employed famous designers to create its own house range of quality clothing.
Bigi at Bergdorf’s was their junior line, a special department for girls. In a 1966 NYT article announcing the “lovely newcomer to its sixth floor”, Andrew Goodman said that “Bigi is more of a personality than an age”.
Bergdorf Goodman is still in business.
