Warp knit fabric is not generally made by hand, but has been made by machine since Josiah Crane invented his warp knitting machine in 1768. The warp knit construction allows for a smoother, flatter, more run-resistant and less elastic knit than its weft knit counterpart. Tricot, simplex and raschel are examples.
