Along with swivel weave and clip dot, lappet weave is a method of creating machine-made embroidery-like figures on a fabric ground. Extra warp yarns—usually of a heavier weight and often of a different color than the ground cloth—are interwoven to create a pattern. This is one method for creating dotted swiss, with the surface threads (floats) clipped.

Eyelash effect is created when the clipped surface floats of a lappet weave fabric are at least 1/4” in length.
