A full, stiff petticoat is known as a crinoline, but it is also the name of a stiff fabric that can be used to make such a petticoat. Similar to buckram but lighter, it is made in a plain open weave and heavily sized. Particularly in the 19th century, crinoline could be made of horsehair with cotton or linen.
