Strawbridge & Clothier was established in 1862 as a dry goods store by Quakers Justus Strawbridge and Isaac Clothier. In 1868 they purchased a larger store, which they soon outgrew. This was replaced by a modern, five story store, arranged in departments.

In 1996, Strawbridge & Clothier, which by then consisted of about 20 stores, was sold to May Company. The name was shortened to Strawbridge’s. In 2006 all remaining stores were changed to the Macy’s name.
