Berkshire, located in Berks County, Pennsylvania produced knit lingerie and stockings. The company got its start in 1896 when Ferdinand Thun and Henry Janssen opened a mill that produced knitting machinery. The Berkshire Knitting Mill was opened in 1906 as a testing ground for the company’s machinery. Soon they were making knit goods for sale. By the 1930s, Berkshire was one of the largest knitting factories in the country. In 1969 the company was sold to Vanity Fair.
