Psychedelic is a word that was coined in 1957 by the psychiatrist Humphry Osmond to describe hallucinogenic drugs (specifically LSD). As the use of hallucinogens grew in popularity starting in the mid 1960s, the visual arts—including textile prints—began to reflect the mind-altering experience.
A true vintage psychedelic print is most likely to date from about 1967 through 1973. Look for bright colors, kaleidoscopic patterns, paisley motifs and abstract, surreal elements.
